The Importance of pH Balanced Skin Care

The Importance of pH Balanced Skin Care

Posted by Dr Molly Joseph on

You may have come across the term, pH balanced, on your personal care products. What is the meaning of pH balanced and why is it so important for your skin?

pH is a measure of how acidic or alkaline a solution is. The skin's natural pH is slightly acidic, around 5.5. This acidity helps to protect the skin from bacteria, viruses, and other environmental pollutants.

Why skin pH really matters

The skin’s pH comes from a thin surface layer of sebum and sweat called the acid mantle. As the skin faces normal, daily aggressors, the acid mantle provides a barrier and maintains an optimal pH balance.

If the skin's pH becomes too acidic or too alkaline, it can lead to a number of problems.
When the skin encounters pH extremes, such as very acidic or very basic, it might not be able to sustain its natural pH or protective barrier against moisture loss, pathogens, and irritants. This can lead to problems like sensitivity and wrinkles also.

If too acidic, skin tends to have dryness, irritation, inflammation, and acne breakouts.

If your pH balance is too alkaline, your skin tends to look dry, flaky, red or irritated. It may also be prone to developing eczema, acne and other inflammatory skin conditions.

What causes skin pH to become unbalanced?

There are a number of factors that can disrupt the skin's pH balance, including:

Internal factors: Aging, hormonal changes, certain medical conditions
External factors: Pollution, smoking, harsh weather conditions, certain skincare products

How to choose pH balanced skincare products

When choosing skincare products, it is important to look for products that are pH balanced. This means that the product has a pH that is close to the skin's natural pH.

Here are some tips for choosing pH balanced skincare products:

Look for products that are labeled "pH balanced."
Avoid products with harsh ingredients, such as alcohol, fragrances, and essential oils.
When a product contains mild, gentle ingredients, it won’t break down or strip away the sebum and sweat in the acid mantle.
Choose products that are formulated for your skin type.

Here are some examples of pH balanced skincare products:

Cleansers: Avoid cleansers that are too harsh or drying. Look for a cleanser that is gentle and has a pH of around 5.5.
Moisturizers: Choose a moisturizer that is formulated for your skin type. Look for a moisturizer that is non-comedogenic and has a pH of around 5.5.
Serums: Serums can be a great way to address specific skin concerns, such as acne, wrinkles, or hyperpigmentation. However, it is important to choose serums that are pH balanced. Look for serums that have a pH of around 5.5.
By using pH balanced skincare products, you can help to keep your skin healthy and protected.

Sensita cleansers, moisturizers, shampoo and hair conditioner products are formulated with gentle ingredients and pH balanced to help promote healthy skin and hair.
